Food for thought On English language/ English words

English language becomes rich because it reflects changing culture , modes of communication, values and ways of thinking by influencing people all over the world.
Because of their vast colony, the language ‘grows’ in different environment under different cultures.
Moreover, English people are reluctant to police ‘their?’ language .
I use italics and question mark for the word ‘their’, because although English language originated in Britain , it can not be monopolised by them .
They are more or less tolerant of the ‘ abuse/use’ of ‘ the language’, because by nature they are open-minded .
Nowadays because of expanding usage of Internet and emailing , computer-
related vocabulary is speedily assimilated by English language.

Walter's wish fulfilled!

Walter's wish fulfilled!
Walter was walking on the beach one day and he found a bottle half buried in the sand. He decided to open it. Inside was a genie. The genie said,” I will grant you three wishes and three wishes only." The man thought about his first wish and decided, “I think I want 1 million dollars transferred to a Swiss bank account. POOF! Next he wished for a Ferrari red in color. POOF! There was the car sitting in front of him. He asked for his final wish, " I wish I was irresistible to women." POOF! Walter turned into a box of chocolates.

ုCULTURE for global village/multiculture ေရာင္စံုယဥ္ ေက်းမွ

SayaNyein 27 februrary 2010

culture is social glue which binds communities to live in peace and harmony.

Iraq is very much in turmoil after the occupation of western forces.
The world has become a better and safer place?
It’s a very big question mark. ????

Mixed sensation of cold and warm is felt in this place called Pyin Oo Lwin alias May Myo.
The weather is rather cold this September, but reports of forest fires in Borneo and Sumatra make me sweating. All over the world people are worrying about “global warming”. A group of researchers recently warned that merely planting trees is not enough to prevent global warming.’ Developing nations’ want economic progress at any cost to the environment.
Rich western nations prefer ‘sustainable economic growth’. ‘Idealists and Environmental Fanatics’ want what we call ‘Zero Environmental Impact(ZEI). This is an example of ‘clash of values’.
In this article I’ll propose a solution to the problem of ‘clash of values’.
We are now four years in the 21st, century. Berlin wall had been broken down. Soviet empire or so- called evil empire had collapsed. Cold war had ended. The bipolar world has turned into multi-polar world. Iraq is very much in turmoil after the occupation of western forces. The world has become a better and safer place? It’s a very big question mark.
New problems arise. You may agree or disagree; there is one good point of communist system. It suppresses ‘religious fanaticism and ultra nationalism’. Ultra nationalism tends to break up communities which formerly live in harmony. One of the causes of social fragmentation is clash of cultures and value systems. In Bosnia, it is clash of Christian and Islamic cultures. In middle-east, the clash is between Jewish and Islamic cultures. In Kashmir, the conflict is between Hindu and Islamic.
Because of jet-travels and instant communication via many global networks such as CNN and Internet, the world seems to become relatively “smaller”, and looks like a “big village” where every event (big or small) is seen and heard by everybody. The word “global village” is coined to describe this phenomenon .Suitable culture for global village should be all-embracing ‘multiculturalism’. Definition of “culture” according to a dictionary is “all the arts, beliefs, and social institutions etc., “Characteristics of a community”. In fact culture is social glue which binds communities to live in peace and harmony. The concept of ‘multiculturalism’ is invented for new world order. I would like the reader to get a glimpse of the idea “multiculturalism” from a poem composed by a renown poet, Derek Walcott. Walcott is a west-Indian-born poet. He represented his “identity-card” in the following poem:
“I’m just a red nigger who loves the sea,
I had a sound colonial education,
I have Dutch, nigger and English in me,
And either I’m nobody or I’m a one-man nation “.
He’s right. The true poet is a one-man nation. He was born and brought up in multicultural environment. That environment made him into what he called “an elated, exuberant poet madly in love with English”. Walcott believes that blacks must “Take in the fact of slavery without bitterness, because bitterness is going to lead to the fatality of thinking in terms of revenge”. If we continue to sulk and say “Look ! what the slave owners (British Colonialist) did”, we will never mature. Throughout history nations conquered other nations in building empires. Empires prospered, declined and collapsed. The conquerors imposed their cultures on the defeated people. In the beginning the clashes of cultures were inevitable. Gradually cultures of the conquerors took root in the new environment, which might be either slightly or very different from the original ones. For example, the British colonial zed India and imposed English language on the Indians. (Imposition of language is some sort of cultural domination). But the English spoken in India is very much different from that spoken by the British.
Old languages mix up and new forms of languages appear. Old languages, institutions, cultures die. New cultures and new values are born. High-tech culture, western culture, Islamic culture are a few examples. Intermarriages of people of different races and cultures are very common all over the world. The world becomes a “melting point” of races and cultures.
If we want to survive as individuals or as a nation, we must change our outlooks and lifestyles, and adopt multiculturalism.
Of course I love Myanmar. Also it is a fact that I’m a global-villager.
I see myself as a “global citizen”. That’s the future of the world. I’m a villager in “global village”.
I praise and practice multiculturalism.

Letter from Michael Snow and Jimmy Wales.

dear friends,

this letter is important

Letter from Michael Snow and Jimmy Wales.

Michael Snow Jimmy Wales

It is hard to believe that less than a decade ago, Wikipedia didn't exist. Now, 330 million people use Wikipedia every month, making it the world's most frequently used online knowledge resource. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers have built and maintained the different Wikimedia projects in the last eight years.

Although we have accomplished a lot, we still have far to go to achieve our vision of a world in which every single person can freely share in the sum of all human knowledge. How can we build on our success to overcome the challenges that lie ahead? Less than a fifth of the world's population has access to the Internet. While hundreds of thousands of volunteers have contributed to Wikimedia projects today, they are not fully representative of the diversity of the world. Many choices lie ahead as we work to build a world wide movement to create and share free knowledge.

We are starting a year-long process to develop a strategic plan for the Wikimedia movement. Specifically, we are trying to understand:

  • Where are we now?
  • Where do we want to be in five years?
  • How do we get from here to there?

Help us find the answers to these questions. Explore them, break them down, reflect on what they mean for our vision and our values. Here are five ways you can help:

  • Join a task force. We are organizing task forces that will explore different topics and produce a set of recommendations related to them. Apply to participate, or form your own ad-hoc groups.
  • Let us know how you can help. If you are an expert in one of the subjects we are dealing with, add yourself to our expert database. This will allow task forces and other volunteers to reach you with questions, and you can respond when you have time.
  • Publish your ideas. Write a proposal on the strategy wiki, and help organize and improve the proposals that are already there. Post ideas on your blog, on mailing lists, and on social networks like Identi.ca, Twitter, and Facebook. Tag those posts with #wikimedia or link to them on the strategy wiki so that others can see them.
  • Host conversations about strategy. In order to develop good plans, we need broad participation. There is no way that the task forces can talk to everyone who has ideas about Wikimedia's future. This is where you can help: host your own conversations about strategy, in person or online, and publish the results on the strategy wiki. There are templates and tools for hosting strategy sessions on the strategy wiki.
  • Talk to us. Give feedback to the strategy team. Tell us your ideas, your hopes, your fears, your goals for the projects. Add feedback to the strategy wiki, or send an email to strategy@wikimedia.org.

If you cannot participate, will you consider making a donation to support Wikimedia? A donation will directly support our global free knowledge programs. We also need volunteers to contribute to our projects, improve our technology, and support our work in other ways.

This century has presented us with an amazing opportunity to transform our civilization, and to create equal opportunities for all human beings. We hope you can join us in our work of sharing knowledge with every person on the planet.

Yours,
Michael Snow

hind parts of lion or a big inverted begging bowl!

We are on a pilgrimage trip from Mandalay to a small village –Mingum(where the world's largest ringing bell is situated).

It stands on the bank of Irrawaddy river .

Beside the big bell , there is an unfinished gigantic pagoda – only the base had been completed .

In front ,there are two chinthes(Burmese mythical lions)guarding the entrance of the big pagoda .

Due to an earthquake and unproportioned built, both of them had been crumbled down to the ground.

Only the hind parts remain to this day. They are almost three stories high and were blackened with moss and lichens.

A professor of mine mistaken this (hind parts of the mythical lion ).with a big inverted begging bowl, seen from a distance!
